Today Gmail's POP3 is not currently working. At about 11:00 AM (US time) the web interface seemed not to work either. Then it started working again, but any ping command sent to pop.gmail.com gives the following result:
A temporary solution to this problem is changing the POP3 server to pop.googlemail.com. This works, at least for me.
